Reviving Gandhian Ideas

May 31, 2009

In my search to find ways to make agriculture more profitable, I have thought about using high end machinery, cooperative farming and all other possible options i can think of. While i was exploring Mahatma’s writings on Village swaraj I find a simple solution. This is clearly articulated by Bharat Dogra in his article at Mainstream weekly.

Planning

April 9, 2009

“Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men’s blood and probably will themselves not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will not die.”

Planning is very important to live in this uncertain world. Planning is the final outcome of our experiences and learning. It reflects our confidence and attitude towards facing a problem.

Person who decides to plan needs to be open minded. Planning involves awareness of all possible options and careful objective evaluation of each one of them for costs and benefits. This should form the basis of all future course of action.

ENTJ – Field Marshal

April 6, 2009

I recently took the Myers-Briggs type indicator test at humanmetrics.com.. Results are here.

“Your Type is ENTJ.  Extraverted(22) Intuitive (88) Thinking(38)  Judging(22)”

Hmm… This is quite a surprise to me. I was graded as an introvert three years ago. Now i am an Extrovert. This transformation needs to be explored.

I have always been a open person freely allowing people into my life and not easily offended when people leave my life. I do cherish the memories left behind by people. But I am fine with out any person to look after me too.

I was forced to remain an Introvert in an routinized environment with out any stimulus for new and active paced learning. Environment was also hostile to me as my chosen path was an exception. I could have chosen to stay silent than to be branded a fool.

Apart from the environmental factors. I would like to believe that i have succeeded in nurturing my skills of communication and analysis during last three years. Also, I am reasonably comfortable with my emotions. These two factors contributed to my conversion into an extrovert and had let me share my analysis  of events with deserving friends.

All is well that ends well.

Radical Humanism and M.N.Roy

March 19, 2009

I don’t know where to begin this, A person who was a religious nationalist, socialist, communist and a radical humanist. He is a rare  Political activist with academic bent and action

M.N.Roy has an experience in the organizing socialist party in Mexico and comintern at Russia and helping the attempts to bring a revolution in china. He co-authored the ideological thesis accepted by ComInternational with Lenin. He started the communist party of India in Tashkent.

Roy was disillusioned by the communism and capitalism. He propounded the theory of radical humanism and proposed a new model of democracy in India. This was in stark contrast to the opinion held by most of the leaders. He and Mahatma gandhi alone were the two apostles who argued for indigenous institutions of democracy.

Roy’s main contention with the capitalism and communism is thier utter disregard for and contempt for the humanbeing. Little elaboration would be, In communism man is treated as a helpless being dancing of the dictates of economic forces and his individual personality is to be subordinated for the collectivity.  Similarly, malfunctions of Parliamentary democracy and lassiez faire economic doctrine are equally ineffective to solve the crises of modern society.

Roy’s direction was for a organized democracy and cooperative economy. He tried to give these concepts a philosophical background through his radical humanism. He founded a new party to mobilise people and rise awareness about his ideas. New humanism is the manifesto of the Radical democratic party.

Freedom is the basic value of radical humanism. This is defined by Roy as,

“The function of life is to live. The basic incentive of organic living is the struggle for survival. It goes on throughout the long process of biological evolution, until in man it becomes the conscious urge for freedom- the supreme human value” and he proceeds to declare that human struggle for freedom is eternal and man conquers environment by knowledge which is the result of this urge for freedom from the restrictions imposed on him. Man is moral because he is rational. Man’s morality develops with the rationality.

Two important reflections of Roy on Democracy deserve attention.

1. His insistence on partyless politics. he argued that parties indulge in scramble for power and there are no means which will not be explored to achieve that end. To quote him,

“It is known from experience how, in an atmosphere of political backwardness and general ignorance, this system can be abused; how people of questionable character can occupy positions of public trust by virtue of belonging to particular party. A party gives priority and prominence to people not of moral integrity or intellectual merit, but those who can be of greatest help for it to capture power. the result is that parties often serve the purpose of promoting the ambition of individuals either thirsting for power for the sake of power or for material gain.”

2. What is the alternative then?

This was discussed by Roy in his Dehradun study camp. He called it “revolution by consent or pursuasion”. This revolution was not by armed insurrection. This revolution should include all sections of the society. This is to be achieved by people’s committees in towns and villages as a means for securing relief and asserting rights. These committees will eventually grow into organs of decentralised power.

These ideas were published in book “New Orientation” published later.

Radical humanism brought him very close to gandhi. Both stood for decentralisation of political and economic power and both stood for partyless democracy to purify politics.

“Reason, Romanticism and Revolution”  is a two volume edition which gives a wider theoretical background for his thinking.

LOST AND FOUND

I see what you have
And I want it
It will be mine
For I’ll pay any cost

Someday you’ll turn around
And she will not be there
For I will have found
What you have lost

You will begin to hate it
But it was all premeditated
Just when you thought
You had everything together
I finally convinced her
That she can do better

Because no matter
where you go
Pick any corner of the world

There’s one thing I know…
There are only
four types of girls:

Either…
For now
For later
Forever
Or forget it

And if she’s three of the four
Then you’re gonna
live to regret it

For now comes and then goes
For later keeps you
on your toes
Forget it never shows
But when forever arrives
Then everybody knows

There is no such phrase
As setting standards too high
So be forewarned…
When forever appears
She catches everybody’s eye

I see what you have
And I want it
It will be mine
For I’ll pay any cost

Someday you’ll turn around
And she will not be there
For I will have found
What you have lost

You will begin to hate it
But it was all premeditated
Just when you thought
You had everything together
I finally convinced her
That she can do better

Because no matter
where you go
Pick any corner of the world
There’s one thing I know…
There are only

Either…
For now
For later
Forever
Or forget it

And if she’s three of the four
Then you’re gonna
live to regret it

For now comes and then goes
For later keeps you
on your toes
Forget it never shows
But when forever arrives
Then everybody knows

There is no such phrase
As setting standards too high

Philosophy of Life >> and a Long journey ends !

December 10, 2008

I refuse to ask the question why I am here. I think this question will end nowhere and I will never ever find an answer and Even if I find it I would never be convinced of answer that I am programmed by some one. I am an independent conscious being who works with in the framework of society.

I think the most important question is, That now that I am here what can I do?

I know the country and society has a problem and I should solve it. To solve it I should first win the trust of the people and then I should be informed of problems and should have solutions.

To solve the problems we need nothing but strong will.

6th of April

I would like to elaborate my views on this topic.

I  have arrived at a conclusion that it is meaningless to search for meaning in life. Your life is what you want it to be. I know it sounds like a cliche. I have a few more words to say.

Noone can be sure of what they want from life. There will be one moment in  life,  when you are earning your own money and seeing world. World as such has no meaning, but individuals tend to create own version of world  due to their exposure and background and It is in this view of world individual can understand what role he should play. I would advise you to stay light [No commitments, dependants] till this point. Then once you know what you want to be for the rest of your life, every thing else will fall in line automatically and decisions are easy to take and enforce.

Sense of Sacred & Profane

December 7, 2008

I have been reading Durkheim’s conception of religion and slowly realising how dangerous unrestricted individualism is for total human race.

Durkheim’s argument is that Enduring of sacred-profane partition is the essence of religion. He concludes at the end that society is the actual target of religion and we actually worship society in its myraid forms. This worship of society is actually an indication of domination of collectivism over individualism. Looking at in complete sense, Durkheim argues that Society is more important than an individual and this is ensured through various means of which religion is primary.  How do i accept a conclusion such as this?

Primary assumptions that are accepted as truths will serve as basis for further development of knowledge. I accept that basic purpose of every organism is to protect itself from extinction. When these organisms act as a group they help each other and prosper and escape the extinction temporarily. They die but what they have built remains in the Will of society which will continue to survive through generations. Society is more powerful and necessary for the survival of human race.

Society is more important than individuals. Durkheim observes that religion is one indirect way of worshipping society. He notes that in modern societies religion will loosen its attraction and other secular ideologies will takes its place. Secular ideologies like socialism, communism and nationalism do the functions of religion ie..,

  1. Disciplinary social force
  2. Cohesive social force
  3. Vitalizing social force
  4. Euphoriac social force

This categorization is done by harry alpert an expert on durkheimian studies. In the globalisation era all the secular forces are repeatedly proved wrong, This leaves so many problems unattended in developing societies. As a result society falls back on the old time tested mechanism religion. Remember religion is based on concept of sacred-profane which is rather non-empirical in nature. No one can prove it, disprove it. So this would explain the revivalism of religion in east and west.

My purpose for writing this post is to understand my secular ideas which connect me to soceity. My sense of sacred & Profane which are not dictated by the religion in my country but is chosen randomly as a representative of society.

  1. Anything that puts people away from starvation.
  2. Anything that removes unnecessary passions.
  3. Anything that enlightens our minds.
  4. Anything that is part of  loving nature.

This list is not complete I hope to edit it asap.
